About the Centurion Art Association

The Centurion Art Association | Centurion Kunsvereniging (CAA) was established on the 23 February 1976. At the time it was founded the first name registered was The South African Art Association – Verwoerdburg. It was automatically affiliated to the national body, The South African Art Association. At the time of inception, the Association was a free roaming organisation that made use of the facilities provided by the national body in Pretoria and the Verwoerdburg Town Council. (Currently Tshwane Municipality: Recreation and Sport) It was well supported in the past by the Council and the Department of Education and Culture that also rendered financial support for the Artist of the Year exhibition as well as for printed publications.

CURRENT STATUS The name of the Association changed in May 1996 to The Centurion Art Association | Centurion Kunsvereniging as it is still known today and it is still associated and affiliated to the national body that is today known as The South African National Association of the Visual Art (SANAVA).

Many things remained the same i.e. the Artist of the Year Exhibition, workshops hosted by artists to enhance the skills of all artists associated with the Centurion Art Association | Centurion Kunsvereniging, and a core group of artists and committee members that persevere in their quest to promote art among the members of the public in the Centurion region. Unfortunately, the Centurion Art Association | Centurion Kunsvereniging lost the support of the Department of Education and Culture who chose to discontinue all financial support to the Association.

The Centurion Art Association | Centurion Kunsverniging is still a non-profit organisation and most of its members are part time artists (pensioners, artists and scholars) as well as full time who struggle to make a living from their art work. The Association was fortunate to enjoy an annual sponsorship from Mr. Gerhard Lourens of Louja Promotions until 2014. He is now retired and remains a lifelong honorary member of the Centurion Art Association | Centurion Kunsvereniging.

Furthermore, Mr Gerhard van Eden, Director Social Development for Tshwane Metropolitan Council, was instrumental in providing the Association with its own facility.

The Centurion Art Association | Centurion Kunsverniging has been very successful during the past 3 years, presenting workshops and exhibitions.
The Centurion Art Association | Centurion Kunsvereniging hosts at least two annual exhibitions of the highest standard. The Centurion Art Association | Centurion Kunsvereniging presents the “Members’ Exhibition” during March of each year and the “Artist of the Year competition-exhibition” during September of each year. Our work is critically assessed by tutors from the reputable Universities in and around Pretoria and many successful artists were erstwhile members of the Centurion Art Association.

The Association would like to make use of the valuable time available, to increase its area of influence and create an environment conducive for the promotion of art in its area of interest by working towards the following goals:

  • The establishment of a scholarship program for young artists.
  • The presentation of at least four exhibitions including the Artist of the Year Exhibition.
  • To promote art in the business communities of Centurion and the greater Southern Africa by gaining their support and cooperation.

Several workshops are presented throughout the year, by highly skilled artists, for its members and other interested beginners and advanced artists.Annually held workshops include: the use of colour, POP Art and design concepts, Impressionism, Pointilism, Kubism and Conceptual art. Painting, Drawing, Pottery and Sculpture classes are also held on a weekly basis. Live Figure Drawing workshops are held every 2nd month, etc.

The Centurion Art Association | Centurion Kunsvereniging caters for the youth, adults and elderly, through the variety of events presented during each year.
